Getting to know Dr. Liu (From gaming enthusiast to a successful academic)
During my undergraduate years, I was a gaming aficionado, dedicating countless hours to computer games. But fortunately, I was admitted to the College of Plant Science and Technology at Huazhong Agricultural University. I pursued graduate studies as an exchange student later at the China Academy of Agricultural Sciences. My initial research skills were somewhat lacking, but as my mindset matured, I decided to leave gaming behind and concentrate on my research projects. This determination paid off: in 2013, I embarked on my PhD journey, ultimately graduating in 2018. My academic achievements during this time included publishing several articles, one of which boasted an impressive 23.4 impact factor. A year after earning my PhD, I relocated to the U.S. to join a prestigious top 30 university, eventually continuing my research endeavors at Cornell University, one of the eight Ivy that known for its agricultural and life sciences.
2. What do you miss most about your hometown when studying abroad?
Homesickness and the impact of COVID-19
I deeply miss my family and friends while studying abroad. The COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for my parents to visit me in the U.S. and complicated efforts to make new friends. Staying at home due to the pandemic and being unable to connect with friends sometimes made me feel lonely.
3.What are the differences between study and scientific research in China and the U.S?
Comparing academic life in China and the U.S.
In the U.S., the academic environment emphasizes mindset, leading to open idea sharing and stronger experimental design skills. Scientists often choose their careers out of passion rather than for high salaries. Additionally, principal investigators (PIs) have limited authority, while students retain the right to make choices.
In contrast, China's academic culture prioritizes performance, resulting in longer lab hours and more task-oriented capabilities. Academics in China also enjoy higher social status, and PIs hold more authority, with students expected to complete assigned tasks.
4. Advice to the students who are going to study abroad
Words of wisdom for aspiring international students
First and foremost, practice your English, as you'll need to communicate effectively with teachers and classmates. Without English skills, you may feel isolated in your new environment.
Additionally, if you're planning to study in the U.S. or Canada, obtaining a driver's license is crucial. Public transportation is limited, so driving is often essential for mobility.
Lastly, make an effort to connect with others. As an international student, forming new friendships can help you feel at home in a foreign country, even without the support of family nearby.
5. What do you think is the most important feature of a Chinese brand
The winning formula for a Chinese brand
Regardless of whether it's a domestic or foreign brand, product quality, accuracy, and stability are crucial. With a strong foundation in quality, competitive pricing becomes the next essential factor. The ideal Chinese brand strikes a balance between product performance and affordability, making it an attractive option for customers.
6. When and how do you know TransGen and what makes you insist on choosing TransGen?
Discovering TransGen and staying loyal
Back in 2010, I was working on an experiment that required a product from another brand, which needed to be maintained at 16℃ - a challenging task. That's when a TransGen sales representative introduced me to a TransGen alternative that could be used at room temperature in just five minutes. Intrigued, I requested a free sample and was impressed with the results. Since then, I've tried numerous TransGen products and found them to offer superior quality and affordability compared to competitors. This is why I've remained a loyal TransGen customer for over a decade.
7. Share your story about using TransGen products in the U.S. with us.
Spreading the word about TransGen in the U.S.
I continued using TransGen products after moving to the U.S. in 2011.
