Viral nucleic acid detection using real time PCR
The genetic material of the virus can be either DNA or RNA. For DNA viruses including the adenoviruses, herpesviruses, polyomaviruses and bocaviruses, the extracted DNA can be directly detected by real time PCR. On the other hand, for RNA viruses including coronaviruses, Zika virus, dengue viruses and Ebola virus, the extracted RNA needs to be converted to DNA before detected by real time PCR or directly detected by real time RT-PCR kits.
